Commissioned Condition is a reflection on authorship and self-representation in the digital and physical world.
In May 2013 Julia Gorostidi asked four portrait artists of the ramblas, Barcelona to create a collective representation of herself. Later this year she commissioned digital artists online to improve the resulting drawing. Using the principle of the Chinese Whispers, Julia sent each new version to another person, thus generating a more and more blured version of herself. Those amateur artists based in different places of the world did not know who was the person represented and were simply asked to make the drawing look “more realistic”.
She collected 14 drawings that she animated in order to give them a voice. The result is a strange discussion between those improved versions, a conversation about the self and its representation, about origins and identity, about the virtual and the physical. The discussion of those versions is based on the emails exchanged with the commissioned artists and want to lead the viewers to reflect on the construction of self-identity in our digital society and on the status of art online.
